Father's Day

Unfortunately, i had to work on father's day. I got my dad a nice card and then went off to work-my brother drove me, so no biking was required. After work, we went out to eat together for father's day. Tomorrow, we are going to downtown Chicago to go on a mini-vacation before my brother leaves to go back to school Friday. We are going for the day tomorrow, staying the night, and coming home Tuesday night. I am not sure if i will be able to blog tomorrow, but if i cannot- rest assured, i did no driving haha. Also, tomorrow cross country team practice begins, so i will be having to ride more to places where practice is held. Practice is very near my house tomorrow, so i will just walk. Hopefully i can blog tomorrow to tell you about it. Also, gas prices dropped to $3.98, bringing the new average down to $4.08.

Total summer mileage: 35.5 miles
Money saved on gas (20 mpg at $4.08 per gallon): $7.24

What it's all about

In mid-February I was on a run in the bitter winter when a great idea hit me. I had been constantly stressing about gas prices rising and worrying about how i am going to afford it. Then, something hit me. I don't need to afford it. I have a bicycle. 90% of my driving is within a five mile radius, so why not replace driving with riding? So that is exactly what I am going to do. My goal is to drive as little as possible this summer- if at all. This includes riding my bike to friends, work, cross country practice, and anywhere else I want to go. As of 5/28/2011, it is officially summer and I am riding my Trek bicycle anywhere I need to go. Each day I will try to make a post about my statistics, where I went, and how it felt.

Over the past 4 weeks, I have somewhat began this mission. I have been riding to work and friends, but I was still required to drive to school. Over those 4 weeks I accumulated 57.2 miles over 4:38:57. That is an average speed of 11.3 mph (the wind and cold sucked) with a max speed of 32.3 mph. The gas was even more expensive then than it is so far this summer...Averaging at least $4.25 for a gallon, and my car getting 20 mpg, i saved $12.16.

Rules:
1. I can accept a ride if ever offered one.
2. I cannot ask for a ride, I must be offered.
3. Driving is an option if my destination is outside a 10 mile radius.
4. Driving is an option if the weather is not permitting me to ride.
5. Driving is an option if ordered by the girlfriend.

Why?

There are 3 great reasons why to bike everywhere you go this summer:

1) Money. This is the most obvious and best reason to bike, to save money on gas. Gas prices are continuing to rise and it is pointless to waste gas driving around your neighborhood starting and stopping repeatedly. Biking may take a little longer, but it will save a remarkable amount of money. And we all like to save money.

2) Exercise. As we all know, America is very fat. Although you may not be, a little exercise never hurt anybody. It will help you no matter what. Exercise makes you feel good because of the endorphins it releases in your brain.

3) The Environment. We have all heard about the Global Warming and environmental issues and everyone is trying to be more environmentally conscious. There are hybrid cars now, but those don't even compare to bicycles. Even if you don't believe in the global warming hype, I for one do not, helping the environment is still a good thing. And don't forget the money you are saving.

So this summer, make a pledge to yourself to bike everywhere possible to help your wallet, your body, and the environment. Share this blog with your friends and family and let's see how many people we can get to join this movement by the end of summer!
